Punters looked prepared for a weekend of sun and thunderstorms as they arrived at the 20th V Festival in Essex wearing shorts and wellies. Festival-goers at both Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in Staffordshire can expect mixed weather, with top temperatures of 31C expected in the UK tomorrow and the possibility of severe thunderstorms.
Experts at the Met Office said there would be a lot of cloud and drizzle around in the South West this morning with heavier rain in Southern Scotland and North West England. This afternoon it is set to be sunny in the East and South East, with good breaks in the cloud expected and highs of 25C in Essex. Overnight temperatures may reach 20C, creating ideal camping conditions for revellers at the V Festival.
A frontal system is set to move into the UK in the early hours of Saturday morning, bringing showers to the South West, Wales, North West and North East England. The rest of the country is expected to see a fine day as warm weather moves into the country from the continent. Temperatures will increase as the day goes on, particularly in central and eastern areas, with possible highs of 31C in London. But the high temperatures will bring the risk of thunderstorms to these areas, which could bring heavy downpours and lightning. Experts at the Met Office say the possibility of tornados could not be ruled out.
Heavy rain is forecast across Northern Ireland, Scotland and the South West on Sunday morning and the rest of the UK could see showers throughout the day. There will also be a risk of gale force winds along exposed coasts in the West. Laura Young, of the Met Office, said: “The weather continues to look unsettled into next week. It will be showery on Monday, particularly in the South, and staying breezy. Tuesday will also be showery and unsettled.”
Calvin Harris and Kasabian are headlining this year’s V Festival, with other acts including Sam Smith, The Script, Ellie Goulding, George Ezra and Hozier. Annie Mac, The Kooks, The Proclaimers, The Courteeners and Imelda May will also be performing. In the evenings crowds can also enjoy a silent disco and fun fair. Sleeping options this year include bell tents, yurts, bunk pads, airstreams, gypsy caravans and even an £8,000 Ultimate RV, which sleeps six and comes with a fully-stocked fridge of alcohol.
