But it was all part of a stunt by local resident James Coxall, who was so fed up with the giant crater, which has been there for eight months, that he decided to have a bit of fun.
James Coxall, 41, placed the comedy legs in the pothole puddle on Haverhill Road near Castle Camps in Cambridgeshire to alert drivers to the danger.
The carpenter used some old clothes and a piece of wood to create the legs, then stuck them upside down in the pothole puddle, weighing them down with a brick.
He posted his creation on Facebook and has since had a big response.
"It's just a bit of fun, and I've had lots of messages about it,” he said. "People seem to like it around here, but then, I am known as a bit of a joker.”
Joanna Anscombe Bell wrote on Facebook:
“Amazingly funny. Great stunt with dummy legs ... should start writing sitcoms on TV.”
Whilst BeeBee added: “Vicar of Dibley Dawn French springs to mind.”
