Neve Baker-Wright, has taken over the lease of The New Inn at Folkingham in Lincolnshire – just weeks after leaving school. Whilst other 18-year-olds are working out which universities to go to, Neve, who sat A-levels in sport, criminology and business studies at the Priory Ruskin Academy in Grantham just two months ago, is already running her own business.
Neve, from Grantham, submitted a business plan to the brewery owner, Admiral Taverns in June, and beat all the other applicants to get the job.
She said: “It was a lot of work juggling my A-levels with writing a business plan but it has been worth it. The brewery said it was the best plan they had seen in years which is nice. I’ve been at the pub two weeks now and it’s gone really fast but also feels as though I have been here forever. All the locals have been lovely and very supportive and helpful.”
The teenager now plans to introduce theme nights and cocktail evenings, as well as develop the menu. She also wants to improve the beer garden by adding decking and play equipment and have live music nights.
“It’s a really rewarding job and I absolutely love it. I love the bond you build with the customers and regulars, “ she added.
Neve is being well supported by her family - her stepdad, Ash Wright, is co-signatory on the lease, and her dad, Andy Baker, is taking on the role of chef. Her mum, Victoria Wright and step-mum Julia Cann are also being supportive. She is no stranger to the hospitality sector, having worked in pubs since she was 14.
