In the 1984 hit song Springsteen sings: “So they put a rifle in my hands, Sent me off to a foreign land, To go and kill the yellow man, Born in the USA.” But executives at Absolute Radio have now removed the words “yellow man” from the song.
Born in the USA is one of Springsteen’s most famous songs and released in 1984 on the album of the same name as its opening track. It was ranked 275th on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The narrative tells of a disillusioned Vietnam veteran’s alienation after the war.
Springsteen did not censor the song when he played it during his The Land of Hope & Dreams Tour at stadiums in Europe and the UK last summer.
Absolute Radio did not provide a comment.
