Three greyhounds who made history by winning a race in a TRIPLE dead heat at odds of MANY MILLIONS to one have been invited back for a REMATCH.
Killishan Masai, Ayamzagirl and Djokovic stunned Sky Sports viewers when all THREE dogs crossed the finishing line at exactly the same time in the 8.50pm race at Romford Stadium in Essex.
Even the track’s photo finish technology was unable to split the greyhounds in the unprecedented triple dead heat. Now the trio are set to return to Romford next Friday (Jan 28) in a special three-runner rematch.
The race will be called the Coral Bring It On Challenge and there will be a first prize of £2,000 and £500 for each of the runner ups.
“Wednesday night’s triple dead-heat was extraordinary, and we are delighted that the connections of all three greyhounds involved in this unique finish have agreed to take part in what will be an equally unique re-run to see if we can get a clear winner,” said Dave Stephens, of Coral bookmakers.
“Before Wednesday’s race, we would have quoted odds of 1,000,000-1 on there being a triple dead-heat, but now we’re a bit more nervous, and those odds have long gone!
“The triple dead-heat has captured the imagination of people across the world, with interest from as far afield as Australia and South Africa, and we’re hoping the ‘title decider’ will prove just as popular.
“And we will be giving the judge a new magnifying glass, just in case!”
Christopher Kyme, owner of Killishan Masai, added: “I have never witnessed anything like Wednesday night’s finish, and am looking forward to the rematch next week, and hopefully it will be another close finish, with my dog just in front!”
Droopys Djokovic’s trainer Jim Daly, said: “The rematch is great for greyhound racing, and if it’s anything like Wednesday’s race, the crowd are in for a treat.
“It’s sure to be close again, but it surely can’t be another dead-heat, can it?”
A huge cheer went up from the crowd when the remarkable triple win was announced on Thursday. The three dogs were contesting the Coralcasino.com stakes over a marathon distance of 925 metres – the furthest that greyhounds can race over – making the feat even more incredible. Afterwards a spokesman for bookmaker’s Coral said the odds of it happening were “many millions to one.”
“Nobody at Romford can remember a triple dead heat ever happening in a greyhound race before, said Simon Clare, of Coral.
“The odds on it happening are many millions to one. It would be like winning the national lottery and then getting struck by lightning minutes later.
“Immediately after the result was called one of the track bookmakers rang his father, who has been betting on greyhound racing since the 1940’s, and he said that he had never seen one before in his lifetime.”
The three dogs were in Trap 1, Killishan Masai at odds of 4-1; Trap 5, Ayamzagirl at odds of 4-1 and Trap 2, Droopys Djokovic, at odds of 12-1.
Bookmaker Dougie Tyler Junior, who has been watching greyhound racing for 45 years, said: “I’ve never been witness to a triple dead heat before, it’s amazing.”
Each of the three dogs received a trophy and the £500 first prize money and £50 for second and third was split between them.
