The singer was spotted wearing a sparkling pink princess dress and a dazzling tiara as she filmed the OPENING SCENE in Buckinghamshire. Ariana, 29, was seen holding a wand and had her long blonde locks flowing as she landed in the fantastical Land of Oz on a large gold throne.
She was greeted by the citizens of Oz, celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, who has been killed by Dorothy. They clapped and cheered as she arrived, then were seen dancing in the streets of the magical Land of Oz, which has been built on farmland in the village of Ivinghoe, near Leighton Buzzard. Ariana was then seen walking down steps into the crowd as they all launched into the song, No One Mourns the Wicked. Wicked, which is mostly set before Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, tells the story from the perspective of the witches, Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West and Galinda the Good Witch.
Ariana stars opposite Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the two-part adaptation, with filming set to continue until August. The Land of Oz, a stunning town of tiny cottages with colourful thatched roofs, has been created in fields in Buckinghamshire for the Universal Pictures production. Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name and was first performed on Broadway in 2003 before opening at the Apollo Theatre in London three years later.
Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, who co-wrote the music and lyrics to the Broadway show, have adapted the screenplay while Jon M Chu is directing. Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum will also feature in the movie, which is set for release on November 27, 2024, with the second part out the following year.
