The first photos of legendary actress Dame Helen Mirren in new Netflix film, The Thursday Murder Club, have been revealed.

The actress, who celebrated her 79th birthday on set, looked unrecognisable as she sported a headscarf and large glasses to play ex-spy Elizabeth in the adaptation of Richard Osman’s best-selling murder-mystery novel. Helen was joined on set in Buckinghamshire by actress Celia Imrie, who was also hard to recognise, with grey hair, a red knitted hat, blue skirt and a pale grey coat with a flower brooch.

Celia, 72, plays another member of the Thursday Murder Club, ex-nurse Joyce, and the pair will be joined by Pierce Brosnan, who plays ex-union activist Ron and Ben Kinglsey, who plays ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim.

Helen, who was dressed in a tartan skirt, brown cardigan and blue blouse, and Celia were spotted getting off a bus and going to the police station in the scene. The film sees the four members of the Coopers Chase retirement village community, based in the fictional village of Fairhaven in Kent, band together to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught up in a real case.

David Tennant and Richard E Grant are also set to start in the Netflix / Amblin co-production, but their parts have not yet been announced.

Osman’s debut novel was released in 2020 and he has since written three more books in the series. The movie is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone filmmaker Chris Columbus.
