As thousands headed to the beaches to enjoy the glorious summer heatwave, there was also a special seaside visit from a number of classic World War Two era aircraft.
British specialist aviation photographer, Darren Harbar assembled several aircraft, including three Hawker Hurricanes, a Spitfire and a variety of vintage military trainers for the Aviation Photocrew from Belgium to photograph over the Isle of Wight from another aircraft.
Darren said: “I’d been looking to assemble a group of Hurricanes over the English Channel for several years. The opportunity came up to arrange some subjects for my friends at the Aviation PhotoCrew, who visit the UK each year to do air-to-air photography. The fighters included two Hawker Hurricanes that had fought in the Battle of Britain, and it was such an honour to have them alongside another Hurricane, over the Channel. We even managed to get a Spitfire into the mix, and some iconic trainer aircraft from the 1940s.”
Two of the Hurricanes are operated by Hurricane Heritage who also flew their North American Harvard for the sorties. The other Hawker Hurricane is operated by Oxfordshire based Bygone Aviation. The Silver Spitfire is operated by Spitfires.com, and this aircraft holds the record for the longest Spitfire flight, having flown around the globe in 2019.
The Aviation PhotoCrew travel the world with specialist aviation photographers to capture air-to-air images and have teamed up with Darren for the last few years when they are in the UK.
