Eyewitnesses have captured incredible photos of a huge waterspout off the Salerno coast in south-western Italy.

Oliver McQueen took a picture of the whirling waterspout as it moved towards the city of Salerno.

He said: “I took the photo in Vietri sul mare, just in front of the city of Salerno, this afternoon, immediately after lunch a strong storm broke out with the formation of the marine trumpet off the coast of Salerno.”

Staff at Hotel Cetus also took pictures of the terrifying tornado, beneath dark storm clouds. The huge waterspout, which looked like something from Hollywood blockbuster, Tornado, lifted 20 shipping containers in the city. At least two people were injured in the storm.

Waterspouts are tornadoes which form over water.
