Passengers on a guided bus in Cambridgeshire had a miraculous escape after the bus exploded into flames following a collision with a car.

The passengers were quickly evacuated from the bus following the collision, which saw both the car and bus burnt to a shell after they burst into flames. Local residents report hearing “an explosion” and seeing plumes of black smoke billowing into the air after the bus and car collided near Longstanton.

Emergency services, including five fire engines and the air ambulance, were quickly called to the crossroads on Station Road between Longstanton and Willingham at 9.29am this morning (Monday). The female driver of the car is believed to have been injured and the guided busway and surrounding roads are now closed. Shocking pictures show the extent of the damage, with both the bus and car gutted.

A local resident said: “I heard a large explosion and moments later I saw lots of black smoke in the air.”

The hazardous area response team, three ambulance officers, two ambulances and the East Anglian Air Ambulance all attended the incident.
